Training

Training for any sport is always tough and badminton training in no exception! Turning an average Joe or Jane into a competitive baminton player takes years of hard work and dedication. Unlike some other sports, it is vitally important in badminton that players learn fundamental techniques in a semi-certain order. All of us have bad habits but the longer we play with improper techniques, the harder it is for us to break them and improve our game. The following training techniques are in the order that I think they should be taught and mastered in order to build a solid foundation of mechanical skills.

Physical Conditioning - If you're out of shape...well this is where you need to start! Badminton specific exercises!

Footwork - Proper footwork is the bedrock of a good badminton player. Nobody really likes doing footwork drills but once mastered, it makes all other skills and improvement possible.

Racket Handling - Sure, you may hit the shuttle, but will it go where you want it to? Will you be ready for a quick return? Proper grip, wrist action, balance, and position are vital.

Serving - The serve is the most important shot in any rally, practice it well!

Shot Making/Placement - The meat and potatoes of the game. Make the shot where and when you need to.
